How Too Make A Pallet Planter - Beginner Guide

This two-in-one pallet planter and privacy screen project, created from upcycled pallets, will provide a touch of seclusion to your patio.

You may customize the height and depth of the screen and planter to meet your needs, and fill it with lovely plants to create a gentle barrier between your patio and the rest of your yard. Alternatively, you may install the pallet planter near your home to create a useful kitchen garden filled with delicious fresh herbs and salad greens.

In addition, these materials will be needed

  • 7  pallets, including 1 with thinner planks
  • Assorted sandpaper to fit your palm sander
  • 20 x 2.5inch screws
  • Pack of 25mm nails
  • Woven weed control liner

Difficulty, Cost, and Time

Materials for this project will cost around £20, depending on the tools you currently have.

This project should take no more than 3 hours to accomplish, depending on your DIY abilities and the materials you use.

STEP 1

Calculate the distance between the pallet's edge and the center supporting timber. At this stage, halve the measurement and draw a line across the pallet. Cut this line with a circle saw, jigsaw, or hand saw. This will form the planter's top edge.

STEP 2

The part you removed will be used to line the inside of the planter behind the top. To hide the holes in the pallet, the part will be somewhat off-set, so you'll need to cut off the additional wood at the end. To make a second long-side of the planter, repeat steps 1 and 2 with a second pallet.

STEP 3

Cut the supporting timber off one side of another pallet with a circular or jig saw. To make short boards, cut along the core supporting timber. Continue on the opposite side of the pallet.

STEP 4

Line the interior of the planter sides you've made with these short boards. Attach the boards with nails from the inside, covering the holes in the pallet.

STEP 5

Cut two shorter sections from another pallet to use as the planter's ends. To begin, cut away the pallet's overlapping edges so the boards are flat with the supporting timber. To make the top edge of the planter sides, repeat step 1. Cut extra planks to cover the interior of the gaps and nail them in place using steps 3 and 4.

STEP 6

Smooth the outside surfaces of the planter sides using a sander.

STEP 7

To put your planter together, cut a rectangle out of the supporting timber at the front corners of the short sides so that the sides can fit together. You'll need to cut out a bigger part where the short sides meet the rear of the long sides to make room for the privacy screen to go into the planter.

STEP 8

When building the planter, the short sides' supporting timbers should sit directly below the long sides' supporting timbers. Screw them together with two screws at each corner of the bottom and middle supporting beams.

STEP 10

When building the planter, the short sides' supporting timbers should sit directly below the long sides' supporting timbers. Screw them together with two screws at each corner of the bottom and middle supporting beams.

STEP 11

Remove the back supports of the thin-plank pallet using a crowbar to form the privacy screen. Cut the pallet front to the desired height for your privacy screen. Two of the spare pieces of supporting timber that you cut away from the in-fill planks earlier will be used to make the uprights. Remove the little pieces of wood from the supporting timbers using a crowbar. Nail the uprights into place along the sides of the thin-slatted pallet front. To keep the screen in place, screw the supporting timbers into the holes in the rear of the planter and to the planter base, using two screws at each corner.
